The emotions of the newborn. From laughter to tears

You may have already realized that your baby can go from laughing to crying in a short period of time and very easily. The reason for these surprising mood swings is because newborn emotionsThey are characterized by manifesting in a very intense way and with a very high frequency, which decreases with age as the baby becomes available calming mechanisms, which are the fruit of its maturation process.

These self-calming strategies are generally associated with routines that are pleasant to you, such as thumb sucking or hugging your bear, but they require a degree of maturation and are the result of an emotional evolution.

The development of these calming strategies will lead to an intelligent use of emotions and they are the seed of the ability that a person will have to generate an adequate response to certain situations.

The crying it is the baby's first form of communication and for parents becomes the priority signal to pay attention to. Generally, when he stops crying he catches us tired and, in short, we pay more attention to him when he is bad and little when he is good.

The latest studies on Gestural and Prosodic Communication of the baby reveal that we must avoid keeping crying as the only means of communication with the baby, paying more attention to the positive communication.

Shared kisses, hugs, caresses, words, songs and games are part of this positive communication. But babies are not always as responsive, so knowing when and how to do it is important. Responding appropriately to their needs and considering their willingness to pay attention to communication and games is essential for the positive development of the baby's emotional intelligence. If you are sleepy or in a bad mood, do not insist and leave it for another time.

Newborns spend about 9 hours sleeping during the day and about 8 hours at night, with different intervals for feeding. If you are attentive, when your baby wakes up you can help to strengthen the affective bond with your child and help him to build a correct emotional development. During wakefulness, babies go through three stages of activity and emotional expression:

1. Quiet alert. It takes place as soon as you wake up. You will lie down and still, observing everything around you. Your breathing will be regular and you will appear calm and satisfied. Take this opportunity to say good morning with joy, fill this moment with pleasant sensations and he will respond to your movements and sounds by looking into your eyes.

2. Active alert. He will be interested in visual objects and auditory stimuli and will try to respond to sounds. He may try to imitate and play with you, move his arms and legs, and turn his neck to see what is going on around him. You can surprise him with brightly colored toys, cheer him on with his favorite object of attachment, or explore new movements with him.

3. Crying. In this third phase, you will be tired. Satisfy his hygiene and feeding needs, and calm him by rocking him in your arms so that he feels safe.

4. Dream. He will rub his eyes, yawn, and maybe get a little nervous. It is preferable that you try to fall asleep on your own during this sleepy stage. If after a while he does not succeed, you can rock him until he falls asleep.
